Over 700 Cartons of Controlled Drugs to Be Destroyed by Ghanaian Authorities
In a decisive public health move, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), is set to safely dispose of a massive consignment of seized opioids intercepted at Tema Port.
This action—mandated by a court order—comes amid growing concerns over the abuse of prescription medications, particularly synthetic opioids, across the region.
What Was Seized? Here’s the Breakdown:
- 📦 26 cartons of Rahol Tapentadol 250 mg
- 📦 160 cartons of Tafradol Tapentadol 120 mg
- 📦 40 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol 120 mg
- 📦 190 cartons of Loperamide 2 mg
- 📦 320 cartons of Chlorpheniramine Maleate
These drugs, especially Tapentadol, are potent painkillers and controlled substances that can lead to addiction, misuse, or trafficking if not properly regulated.
Government's Commitment to Public Safety
The Health Ministry and the FDA have reassured the public that the disposal process will comply with strict safety, legal, and environmental protocols to avoid pollution or unintended exposure.
“We are committed to protecting public health and preventing the illegal distribution of powerful drugs that can harm our communities,” an FDA spokesperson said.
