In a heartbreaking turn of events, Kenyan student Dismas Mutai has lost over $20,000 (approximately KSh 2.8 million) that was meant for his Master’s degree studies in the UK after falling victim to online betting.

The 24-year-old, who had been granted a scholarship to study International Project Management at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in London, is now seeking financial help to regain his footing after gambling away his entire savings.

How the Money Was Lost

Mutai admitted that he had been betting on the popular game Aviator and, unfortunately, lost everything. He shared his experience with Tuko News, a major Kenyan news outlet, expressing deep regret over his actions and the impact it has had on his future.

"It was all too fast. I thought I had control, but the losses piled up quickly," he says, overwhelmed by the enormity of his mistake.

Mutai’s Academic Dreams at Stake

Having worked hard to secure a scholarship, Dismas was excited about the opportunity to further his studies at Anglia Ruskin University, a well-respected institution in London, where he was set to pursue a Master of Science in International Project Management. This was a major step toward his professional aspirations in project management and international development.

Unfortunately, his dream has now been derailed as the scholarship was contingent upon the funds he had saved up for his travel and initial living expenses.

A Struggle with Regret and Depression

Now struggling with depression, Mutai finds himself at a crossroads, overwhelmed by the financial setback and its implications on his education. He is appealing for help from well-wishers, hoping to raise the funds necessary to regain his place at Anglia Ruskin University.

"I feel like I let everyone down, especially my family. My dreams of studying in the UK are slipping away, and all I want is a chance to correct my mistakes," Mutai shares.

Lessons Learned: Gambling Can Be Risky

Dismas Mutai’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of online gambling and the emotional toll it can take. His online betting losses not only jeopardize his future but also highlight the growing concerns about the mental health impacts of gambling addiction.

Seeking Financial Assistance

To help Dismas fulfill his educational goals, a fundraising initiative has been started to raise the necessary amount. Mutai has set up a platform to accept donations from individuals willing to help him get back on track.

“I am truly grateful for any support, and I promise to use this opportunity to make a positive impact on my community,” Mutai says, holding onto hope.
