Nigeria — A 14-year-old schoolgirl has ignited controversy across social media platforms after she allegedly stole her mother’s hard-earned savings to purchase a mobile phone for her teenage boyfriend, who is suspected of planning to use the device for online scams, commonly known as "Yahoo Yahoo."

The shocking incident, first reported by social media handle @TrendingEx on X (formerly Twitter), claims the teenage girl discreetly stole 150,000 Naira — roughly equivalent to GHS 1,456 — from her unsuspecting mother’s purse to finance the surprising gift.

Photos shared online show the girl alongside her boyfriend, her distressed mother, and a group of neighborhood elders, who intervened after the secret transaction came to light. The images have since gone viral, sparking heated conversations about parental control, peer influence, and the growing lure of cybercrime among Nigerian youth.

According to the online reports, the girl’s boyfriend allegedly intended to use the smartphone to kick-start an internet fraud career — locally dubbed "Yahoo Yahoo" — a term that refers to online financial scams often targeting foreign victims.

While the precise location within Nigeria remains unclear, the story has triggered widespread outrage, with many netizens calling for stronger parental supervision, digital ethics education in schools, and community vigilance to curb the rising trend of teenage involvement in cyber-related crimes.
