For the first time in history, the island communities of Azizakpe, Alorkem, and Aflive in the Ada East District have joined Ghana’s growing electrification network, thanks to newly commissioned mini-grid projects designed to deliver reliable and sustainable power to these long-overlooked settlements.

The landmark initiative, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), is expected to spark a wave of social and economic transformation across the communities, which until now had endured years of limited access to modern energy.

A Game-Changer for Over 3,000 Residents

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, described the development as a "giant step forward" in Ghana’s mission to ensure inclusive energy access.

“This project is just the beginning. Over 3,000 residents here will immediately benefit, and very soon, we shall launch an even bolder program to connect more than 250,000 people across 150 island and lake communities nationwide,” Jinapor announced.

The Minister emphasized that the government’s ultimate aim is to achieve a near-universal electrification rate of 99.8% through its Light for Life Program, positioning Ghana as a leading example of energy equity on the African continent.

Swiss Support for Sustainable Energy

The Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, who was present at the event, praised the partnership for bringing light and opportunity to the islanders. She also emphasized the importance of protecting the investment through diligent maintenance.

“It would be unfortunate if these mini grids are not properly maintained. I especially urge the Volta River Authority (VRA) to ensure these assets are cared for. I am confident the mini-grids have been entrusted to competent hands,” Giger stated.

VRA Pledges Long-Term Stewardship

In response, Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, Acting Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining the mini-grid systems to ensure reliable service delivery.

“As the operating entity, the VRA is fully committed to managing these assets sustainably. We appreciate the Ministry’s assurance of continued support in optimizing these systems to their fullest potential,” Obeng-Kenzo assured.

Advancing Ghana’s Renewable Energy Goals

The mini-grid installations represent a significant milestone in Ghana’s broader strategy to enhance renewable energy penetration, reduce energy poverty, and empower remote communities to participate in the national economy.

The project underscores the government's and its development partners’ shared vision: Light for All — Energy for Life.
