NAPO Clears the Air: “I’m Not Running for NPP Flagbearer in 2028”
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has shut down rising speculation about a potential 2028 presidential bid, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to building unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as Ghana’s 2024 elections draw closer.
NAPO Prioritizes Unity Over Personal Ambitions
Speaking on the sidelines of the NPP's strategy meeting on Wednesday, April 16, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 presidential race, made it clear that his sole focus remains on strengthening the party’s internal cohesion — not positioning himself for future leadership.
“My immediate interest now is to get a united party for a flagbearer to be eventually crowned,” NAPO told reporters, brushing aside discussions of his own political aspirations for the 2028 election cycle.
“I’m Not Running in 2028” — NAPO Puts Rumors to Rest
In recent weeks, speculation had grown about whether the Education Minister-turned-running mate would seek the NPP’s flagbearer slot in the next election cycle. But in a direct and unambiguous response, Dr. Prempeh stated:
“No, I am not running in 2028.”
His clear stance is widely seen as an effort to shift attention back to the immediate task of rallying NPP supporters behind the current campaign and ensuring victory in the December 2024 elections.
NAPO’s Message: Party First, Politics Later
As internal contests and succession talk swirl around Ghana’s political circles, NAPO’s remarks signal a strategic focus on party unity rather than personal ambition. Party insiders view his statement as both a loyalty pledge to the Bawumia ticket and a call for disciplined focus ahead of the polls.
