McDan Group Partners with GPHA to Boost Marine Transport and Salt Export in Ghana
Read the Full Story
The McDan Group and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at improving marine transport and logistics in Ghana.
This partnership focuses on creating a marine terminal, the "ElectroChem Terminal, Port of Ada," designed to facilitate managing and exporting bulk natural and processed salts.
The facility will be located on the Volta River.
The collaboration comes in response to logistical challenges McDan Group faces in transporting salt via road to the Port of Tema.
By building the new terminal, the companies aim to streamline salt exports, cut logistics costs, and strengthen access to regional and global markets. ElectroChem Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of McDan, will oversee salt production, with potential output exceeding 2 million tonnes annually.
Project Development and Economic Impact
The project will involve several key steps, including conducting feasibility studies, constructing port facilities, and upgrading road networks for better access to the terminal.
A joint project development team will be formed to manage technical discussions, stakeholder engagement, and operational procedures.
McDan Group will be responsible for the financial management of the project, while GPHA will guide regulatory approvals and provide technical support. The new terminal is expected to enhance salt production, create jobs, and improve socio-economic conditions in the Ada region.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Daniel McKorley of McDan Group and Michael Achagwe Luguje, Director General of GPHA. Both parties view this agreement as a significant step in advancing Ghana’s marine industry and promoting economic growth.
