Popular Ghanaian spiritualist Nana Kwaku Bonsam has issued a passionate plea to President John Dramani Mahama for a government appointment—as Minister for Sanitation—vowing to crack down on Ghana’s deepening waste management crisis with military-style discipline.

In a viral TikTok video, the traditional priest said he is ready to tackle the nation’s perennial sanitation issues head-on, even if it means arresting and fining citizens who litter or dispose of waste improperly.

“If for nothing at all, just give me the Sanitation Minister role,” Kwaku Bonsam declared.
“I will use soldiers, police, fire officers, and prison staff to instill order and clean Ghana once and for all.”

Kwaku Bonsam’s Radical Proposal at a Glance:

Issue...............................................Proposed Solution

Indiscriminate Littering.....................GH¢50 fine for first offence

Repeat Offenders..............................GH¢100 for second offence

Chronic Violators...............................Minimum 3-day jail sentence

Enforcers........Combined force of police, soldiers, fire, and prison officers

Goal............................................National cleanliness and flood prevention

“Ghana’s Problem Is Indiscipline—And I Have the Cure,” Says Kwaku Bonsam

According to Kwaku Bonsam, Ghana’s sanitation challenge is not just infrastructural but rooted in widespread public indiscipline.

“You don’t need many years of governance to fix this. You need guts and law enforcement,” he said.

He emphasized that unless bold steps are taken—especially ahead of the rainy season, which often leads to widespread flooding—the nation risks worsening health and environmental crises.

But There’s a Catch: Sanitation Ministry No Longer Exists

President Mahama, upon assuming office on January 7, 2025, implemented a major cabinet reshuffle, reducing ministries from 30 to 23 to cut costs. Among those scrapped was the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, making Bonsam’s call an appeal for both reinstatement and appointment.

While it is unclear if the spiritualist is aware that the ministry has been dissolved, his plea underscores growing public frustration over Ghana’s persistent waste management issues—especially in urban centres.

Kwaku Bonsam’s Loyalty to the NDC

Kwaku Bonsam, a high-profile figure during the 2024 general election, openly supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and John Mahama's return to power, campaigning on platforms that promised government austerity and efficiency.

Now, his call to service could be seen as a bid to contribute to the administration he helped usher in—despite his unconventional background.

Public Reactions and Political Implications

While some Ghanaians online found his proposal amusing or bizarre, others have lauded the idea of strict law enforcement in dealing with littering and poor sanitation habits.

“You may laugh, but we need exactly this kind of fire to clean Ghana,” a commenter said on TikTok.

Political analysts note that the request, while symbolic, could pressure the Mahama government to reconsider sanitation as a top-tier national issue, especially as the rainy season looms.
