Irate NDC Youth Storm Mampong Office Amid MCE Nomination Controversy
A chaotic scene unfolded in Asante Mampong, Ashanti Region, on Thursday, April 10, when disgruntled supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stormed the party's local office, wreaking havoc by vandalizing property and setting several items on fire. The youth, frustrated over what they believed was an unjust nomination for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position, expressed their outrage by targeting the party's office.
Unrest Fueled by Nomination Rumors
The trouble began when rumors circulated that Esther Dwomoh, a name unfamiliar to the supporters, had been nominated for the MCE position. However, there has been no official communication from the Presidency confirming the nomination. This uncertainty fueled the anger of the NDC youth who were confident that either Yakubu Yakubu, the party's 2024 Parliamentary Candidate, current Constituency Chairman Mohammed Kamil, or Imoro Iddrisu should have been the preferred choices following the vetting process.
In a tense confrontation, the group of youth vandalized party property, destroying chairs, tables, and setting fire to items at the front of the Mampong office.
Police and Fire Services Respond
Police forces were swiftly deployed to the scene to maintain order, though no arrests have been made thus far. Firefighters also arrived promptly to extinguish the flames that had engulfed party property.
NDC's Response to the Incident
The Asante Mampong Constituency Communications Officer, Kwaku Bernasko, confirmed the incident, emphasizing that the unrest stemmed from a viral rumor regarding the MCE nominee. "It's a group of the youth who are agitating about a rumor that is moving around that the Mampong MCE nominee had been given to a lady called Esther Dwomoh," Bernasko said. "They came to the party office to express their displeasure to the party executives who were around."
He continued, "We couldn’t control the crowd; party properties like chairs and tables were broken and set ablaze at the forecourt of the party office."
