If I Did What Bagbin Did to Kufuor, They Wouldn’t Survive – Afenyo-Markin
Ghana’s political landscape is once again charged with heated discourse as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin responds to mounting criticism of his leadership.
In a bold defense, the Effutu MP asserts that scrutiny comes with the territory of being an effective opposition leader, drawing historical parallels to previous opposition figures who faced similar attacks.
Speaking on Joy News’ The Probe on February 2, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that his critics are reacting to the growing strength of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) opposition.
A History of Opposition Leaders Facing Resistance
Afenyo-Markin dismissed claims that his leadership is under unprecedented attack, arguing that past opposition leaders have faced even harsher criticisms.
“J.H. Mensah was attacked. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu came under fire. Alban Bagbin, as Minority Leader, faced immense resistance. I won’t be the first,” he stated.
Highlighting Speaker Alban Bagbin’s tenure as Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin accused the now Speaker of Parliament of aggressively challenging former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
“Bagbin did worse. Mr. Speaker, who is now a respected diplomat, fiercely opposed John Kufuor’s administration. If I were to replicate even a quarter of what Bagbin did to Kufuor against the current government, they wouldn’t survive,” Afenyo-Markin claimed.
The Strength of the NPP’s Opposition
According to Afenyo-Markin, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is reacting to the effectiveness of the NPP’s opposition efforts.
“The NDC is pushing back because they see a formidable opposition. We have a strong team. Of course, we make mistakes, but that is normal in politics,” he asserted.
Despite the mounting criticisms, Afenyo-Markin signaled that his approach to opposition politics is still unfolding.
“I’ve not even started criticizing them properly yet,” he hinted, suggesting that his political strategy will intensify in the coming months.
Public Reaction and Political Implications Afenyo-Markin’s statements have sparked a wave of reactions from both political analysts and the public.
Some commentators argue that his comparison to past opposition leaders highlights a cyclical pattern in Ghana’s political landscape, while others believe his rhetoric signals a more aggressive stance from the NPP.
Political strategist Dr. Kwesi Anning notes, “The opposition’s role is to hold the government accountable. However, the manner in which this is done often dictates public perception. Afenyo-Markin’s remarks suggest that we may see a more confrontational opposition strategy in the months leading up to the next election.”
With Ghana’s political tensions rising, the question remains: will Afenyo-Markin’s approach consolidate the NPP’s support base, or will it deepen partisan divides?
