Mahama Opens Up: My Dad Was Jailed for 2 Years After a Coup
President John Dramani Mahama has opened up about the difficult decisions that shaped his political journey. The former Member of Parliament and Vice President recently shared how witnessing his father’s political struggles made him hesitant about entering politics.
The Burden of Political Heritage
Mahama’s father, the late Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, serving as the Member of Parliament for the West Gonja Constituency and the first Regional Commissioner of the Northern Region under President Kwame Nkrumah. Arrest, Imprisonment, and Trauma
Mahama revealed that his father was arrested and imprisoned for two years solely due to his political affiliations.
The experience left deep scars, leading the elder Mahama to abandon politics altogether and focus on business, eventually becoming a successful commercial rice farmer.
“I was reluctant to go into politics because my father had been in politics, and there had been a coup that led to his arrest and imprisonment for two years.
"After that, he was so traumatized that he never wanted to have anything to do with politics. He later went into business and became a successful commercial rice farmer," Mahama stated in a post shared by GHOne TV on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Overcoming Doubts to Lead Ghana
Despite these reservations, Mahama ultimately embraced politics, rising through the ranks to become Ghana’s President. His personal journey is a testament to resilience and a deep commitment to public service, shaped by his father’s sacrifices and hardships.
