In the polls scheduled for December 7, President Nana Akufo-Addo claims he has neither authority nor desire to force anyone on the people of Ghana. As president, I am not allowed to force someone upon you. Neither the authority nor the interest are mine.
The next person to fill my position will be chosen by the people of Ghana, just as I was. "But I think I am in a good position to advise who should come and stand in my shoes as an 80-year-old man who has been President of Ghana for two terms and who has been involved in a lot of Ghana's recent history, certainly in the history of the Fourth Republic," he said.
During his tour to the region, the President made this statement while speaking to a number of stakeholders, including the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs and the clergy. President Akufo-Addo travelled to the area to express gratitude to the key players for granting him the opportunity to govern the nation for eight years, as well as for their support and cooperation in keeping the peace and security in the area during that time.
He stated that in light of the government's interventions in the fields of road construction, agriculture, health, and education, among others, he thought Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the leader of the New Patriotic Party, would be in the best position to serve Ghana more effectively by carrying on the government's current course of development.
After working with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for nearly 20 years, President Akufo-Addo praised him, calling him "a hard-working, honest, trustworthy man" with "deep knowledge, great experience in economic policy and management" and "a man of great loyalty." As the Vice President, President Akufo-Addo stated that Dr. Bawumia had been "deeply involved" in almost all of the initiatives his government had implemented and was prepared to carry them out to guarantee their anticipated success. He clarified that Dr. Bawumia's main opponent, former President Mahama, had already served as president but had been rejected in 2016 and 2020 due to his poor performance, thus Ghanaians would need to reject him once more.
John Mahama was chastised by President Akufo-Addo for his previous vehement opposition to the Free Senior High School policy and the investments being made, but he later declared that he would examine and enhance it upon taking office.
