Teachers and University Staff Strike: TEWU and SSA-UoG Demand Government Action
Read the Full Story
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) have initiated a nationwide strike that will end on Friday, September 20, 2024, causing significant disruptions to the education sector in Ghana. The strike is a direct reaction to the government's alleged delay on important problems impacting the welfare of educators and university staff. It is the result of months of anger and fruitless negotiations.
TEWU has emphasised the non-implementation of vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances, despite a clearance letter from the Ministry of Finance dated August 2, 2024, noting the government's disregard for previously agreed-upon criteria. The union further demands the repayment of eight months' worth of outstanding Tier Two payments, as well as the recalculation and payment of interest incurred from delayed Tier Two contributions to the union's fund. The SSA-UoG is equally frustrated with the government's inaction on past agreements, which is why they are on strike as of Monday, September 16, 2024.
Academic operations at Ghana's public universities have come to a complete halt due to the strike. In order to demand that the government resolve their unresolved issues and guarantee a dignified retirement for its workers, TEWU is pushing its members to join the industrial action.
The strike highlights the need to address the concerns of educators and university personnel and serves as a sobering reminder of the fragile status of labour relations in Ghana's education sector. It is unclear how the government will react to this most recent request for action and whether a compromise can be made to guarantee Ghana's educational system runs smoothly.
