A “massive” overnight drone attack on Moscow and its surrounding region has left at least one person dead and three injured, according to Russian authorities. The assault, described as the largest Ukraine-led drone strike on the Russian capital to date, has also temporarily shut down four major Moscow airports, severely disrupting air traffic.

Details of the Attack

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that 73 drones targeting the capital were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defenses. Despite these efforts, drones managed to strike residential areas, causing significant damage.

Images circulating on social media and official channels show burnt-out vehicles, shattered apartment balconies, and rubble-strewn streets. Governor Andrei Vorobyov of the Moscow region posted photos of a residential building on fire, noting that 12 residents, including three children, had to be urgently evacuated from their homes.

Russia’s Response and Broader Impact

Russia's Ministry of Defense reported that a total of 337 Ukrainian drones were either intercepted or destroyed across Moscow and nine other regions, indicating a nationwide escalation of hostilities.

The timing of this unprecedented drone assault is particularly significant, as it comes just hours before a crucial US-Ukraine meeting in Saudi Arabia, where diplomatic talks aimed at ending the war are scheduled to take place.

Impact on Moscow's Civilian Life

In addition to human casualties, the attack has forced the temporary closure of Moscow's four key airports, stranding passengers and disrupting flights both domestically and internationally. Officials are assessing damage to infrastructure while ensuring public safety in affected areas.

The escalating drone warfare is rapidly redefining urban security risks in Moscow, as the city faces increasingly sophisticated aerial threats.

Conclusion

As tensions between Russia and Ukraine intensify, this record-breaking drone strike marks a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic solutions ahead of upcoming international talks.
