The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has issued a public advisory highlighting the telltale signs of online romance scams and cyber fraud—warning Ghanaians to stay vigilant against the deceptive tactics used by fraudsters, often referred to locally as "Sakawa boys" or "fraud boys."

According to EOCO, these cybercriminals often appear too perfect to be true, quickly establish emotional intimacy, and consistently avoid meeting in person—a major red flag for anyone engaging in online relationships or financial exchanges.

EOCO’s Romance Scam Red Flags:
  • They seem too perfect
  • They move very fast emotionally
  • They always have an excuse not to meet physically
  • They may eventually ask for money under urgent circumstances

“Romance Fraud Is a Crime — Your Mind For Dey”

In a public alert posted on EOCO’s official Facebook page, the agency cautioned citizens:

“Do you know the red flags to look out for when dealing with a fraud boy, Sakawa boy or a romance scammer? Romance Fraud is a Crime. Your mind for Dey.”

EOCO is urging the public to report suspected cases of romance scams or cyber fraud to their dedicated hotlines:

📞 0800-910-910 or 0547-419-419

Stay Protected: Report Suspicious Behavior

As Ghana continues to see a surge in online scams and romance-based fraud, the EOCO’s timely alert serves as a reminder for the public to prioritize safety, especially when dealing with individuals met on social media platforms, dating apps, or international connections.

The agency encourages anyone who suspects they may be a target to seek help immediately and not send money or personal information to individuals they haven’t verified offline.
