Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has once again expressed how strongly he opposes the acceptance of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghanaian culture, arguing that they are incompatible with the religious and cultural traditions of the nation.
During his Eastern Regional tour, Dr. Bawumia spoke to clergy, traditional leaders, and stakeholders in Anyinam. He stressed that the Bible and the Quran, along with the fundamental principles of Ghanaian traditions, oppose LGBTQ+ activity. He was speaking to the crowd following the inauguration of a recently built constituency office by Abena Osei Asare, the Member of Parliament for Atewa East.
Regardless of the consequences or external pressures, Dr. Bawumia said that the NPP, under his leadership, would adamantly resist any attempts to import LGBTQ+ beliefs into Ghana.
"Nananom, there have been some recent problems about the introduction of LGBTQ, which supports same-sex marriages. We will not permit such an event to take place in Ghana, and it will never exist in this country. "We will stand firm and resist its introduction at all costs; we won't agree for it to destroy our country," he said. "It is not in the Bible and Quran too; it is not in our tradition, culture, or values."
Regarding the galamsey issue, Dr. Bawumia stated that a mining licensing regime will be issued locally, with chiefs serving as important partners in the issuance of the mining license.
This was in response to calls from the traditional leaders to streamline the activities to mitigate the pollution of water bodies and destruction of forest reserves. "I wish to implement new regulations for the small-scale mining industry. Its licenses must be formalised, and community mining initiatives must be implemented.
“With this licensing regime, it will not be centralised in Accra; we will decentralise it to the local people and the chiefs. Nananom will be a key part of granting licenses,” he added.
