Akua Donkor, founder of Ghana's Freedom Party (GFP) and prominent political figure, has passed away at 72. She died on October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra. The cause of her death is currently undisclosed, and her family is receiving condolences.
Donkor was known for her vibrant political presence and unwavering advocacy for farmers and women’s rights. She made headlines by repeatedly running for president, demonstrating resilience despite financial obstacles.
Her outspoken nature helped her connect with grassroots communities and address their challenges.
Born in the Ashanti Region, Donkor started as an Assemblywoman for Herman. She first ran for president in 2012 as an independent candidate but was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting eligibility criteria.
Rather than pursuing legal action, she chose to support Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
In 2016, her political ambitions faced another setback when a fire destroyed her party's headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region. Despite this, she remained dedicated to advocating for marginalized communities.
Ahead of the 2024 general elections, Donkor was preparing her campaign with promises like free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services, free education, and better wages for farmers. She was the third candidate on the ballot.
After her passing, many have taken to social media to pay tribute, recognizing her legacy as a passionate advocate for farmers and women’s rights in Ghanaian politics.
