Deputy Education Minister to Organised Labour: A nationwide strike is not the answer to the Galamsey crisis

Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, the Deputy Minister of Education, has urged organised labour to reevaluate its intended statewide strike due to worries about galamsey issues. Speaking on Thursday, October 3, at the Ghana Teacher Prize in Kumasi, Prof. Nyarko highlighted that the best course of action is more communication among stakeholders rather than industrial action.
He issued this call in response to organised labour's announcement of an October 10 strike, which was prompted by the government's failure to declare a state of emergency due to the devastating effects of galamsey.
As the Kwadaso Member of Parliament, Prof. Nyarko emphasised the importance of working together to find a solution.
"Demonstrations and strikes are not always the best ways to solve problems or satisfy people's desires. It's not the wisest course of action." In my opinion, it's primarily about communication, as both the government and people express worry about the actions of Galamsey."In order to address this problem, the government has implemented measures. "To address it, we need to work together, not just from the government but also from other civil society organisations, the media, chiefs, traditional leaders, the clergy, and everyone else."
“I will plead with organised labour that instead of embarking on a strike we don’t know when it will end, the best way is to keep engaging the authorities for us to come to a meaningful, progressive, and productive solution to this particular problem. Industrial action will only lead to a reduction in productivity that will affect our revenue.”
