In some areas of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions, the illegal mining practice known as galamsey in Konongo, Ashanti Region, is a major danger to the availability of power. The GRIDCO substation pylons are placed on the concession of Northern Ashanti Mines, which has been overrun by illegal miners, endangering vital infrastructure.

A GRIDCO substation located in Northern Ashanti Mines' operations area is currently under danger because of persistent galamsey actions that have damaged multiple pylons. This condition elevates the potential of power disruptions impacting Konongo Township and adjacent areas.

The region's unlawful mining persists despite the efforts of the mine's security task team. The mining corporation has expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out that their attempts to work with regional security organisations, such as the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), have not succeeded. The mining company's task team was attacked by armed individuals in a recent escalation, which led to injuries and property damage. The state of affairs continues to be extremely problematic for the region's power supply as well as the mining operations.

Now that information indicates the galamseyers intend to launch another attack on the mine and its workers on Thursday, October 10, the company fears an impending clash between its security officers and the illegal miners.
